Terminal 5, Heathrow, London
Temporary Roof Access Gantry Access System
The interlink bridges at Terminal 5, Heathrow connect the Rail Station interchange to the main terminal building. These bridges are floating planes of glass supported by steel portal frames running rhythmically along the profile. As works were proceeding in the immediate area, the installation of roof and large glazing panels would need to adopt a different approach.
Access for men and materials to the bridge roof areas would pose a challenge. Full access for men and materials were required without compromise to other operations on site and conducted in absolute safety.
Alternative Access Logistics Ltd management team drew upon their considerable combined experience and literally turned the problem “on its head”. The space frame aluminium gantries were designed to run on profiled tracks supported from the immediate roof structure below. This permitted a clear area below the gantry for the works. A payload capacity of 450kg, complete with materials handling hoist, access ladders and guard rails allowed the gantry to work independently of other trades.
Alternative Access Logistics provided full access consultancy services; from concept and design through to delivery and installation on site that also included: prototyping, working drawings, assembly, load testing and independent design checks.
