Terminal 5, Heathrow, London
Painting Platforms
T5 Heathrow is one of the world’s largest airports and the structural members needed to support it are nothing but colossal.
Following the erection of the main roof steel work Alternative Access Logistics Ltd were commissioned to design, manufacture, supply and install four separate temporary suspended platforms.
The platforms were manufactured from a rigid and lightweight aluminium space frame base with an integrated hop-up complete with safety cage.
The steel structure required to have the final layers of protective paint applied. This needed to be achieved with the all the main and support steel work in place. At the central section of the main rafters the steel was approximately 40 metres off the ground. Other typical areas that needed to be accessed for painting also included the upper part of the steel.
The platforms were designed specifically to offer the end user maximum usability and longevity being passed onto the T5 cleaning and maintenance teams for use throughout the working life of the building.
Other conventional access systems or scaffolding would have caused severe disruptions and would not have been able to easily reach the intended locations. Alternative Access Logistics are proud to have offered T5 a bespoke temporary system that has given added value.
